Calling him a 'reluctant warrior' would be an understatement; this man loathes
combat, and will try to avoid it if at all possible.  While this might be
somewhat naive of someone commanding one of Starfleet's most modern ships,
he comes by it honestly: he has seen combat up close and personal, and has seen 
what its cost is in terms of humanity.  He simply refuses to pay that price if 
he can help it.

Otherwise, Jack Veld is as well-adjusted as you would want in an officer: keen
